The 3 girls, Sen, my girls M and Big T, did everything together especially sports at school. Between April and I, one or both of us attended every basketball, volleyball and track they did from 6th grade to graduation. Being a small school, we traveled for most games. One place we traveled was Wilson Creek. April and I said we were going to end of the road of earth when we went there. We always rode the bus with the team when possible. But sometimes it just didn't work out and one of us drove.
The volleyball team had a game in Wilson Creek. April drove and I rode with her. Games didn't start till 5 or 6 pm, so it was always dark going home. The bus with the coaches and team always stopped to eat on the way home. This night was no different. However, April and I left after the bus had driven out. We knew where they were stopping so of course we laughed and said, "oh well".
As we drove out of sight from the school, which by the is the only building in Wilson Creek that is open at night, April suddenly said: Oh NO! I forgot to get gas!" I thought she was kidding, but nope. The gas tank was on empty. (I need to admit that April and I talked all the time, especially when the girls or our husbands were not with us. Neither of us thought of gas for the car). The was NO cell service, no other cars on the road, and we were diffidently in the middle of nowhere. True to April's nature, she simply laughed and said to me that the road was almost all downhill, and we could push the car into a gas station when we found one. We then hoped that the coaches and the team would notice we had not made it to the dinner spot.
So, we simply laughed and decided this was an adventure for us and we coasted and drove on fumes. Did we catch the bus? Yep! Did we have to push the car? Nope. We laughed for years when traveling together as one would remind the other "did you get gas yet?"
April, I miss you so much. Love you to the end of time.
I can hear your laugh as I type...
